Many have heard of the Empire Windrush, a famous ship that transported hundreds of people from the Caribbean to Essex in 1948. The term “Windrush” is now often used to describe the generation of West Indian people who traveled to England between 1948 and 1971. However, Empire Windrush was not the only ship that brought young, bright-eyed West Indians across the Atlantic. A lesser-known Italian ship, the SS Irpinia brought many West Indian passengers to Italy where they would eventually complete their journey to England. SS IRPINIA is a short documentary uncovering the journey of young West Indian dreamers making their way to England for a better life in the wake of WWII.
