The structure of the nuclear family around a dinner table is historically a space where queer people feel alienation, but what happens if we change the shape of the table, into one which enables queer communities to gather in fluid and unexpected ways?
Where do our chosen families dine together? is a semi-autobiographical documentary and debut of animator Noah Greenhalgh, exploring LGBTQIA+ community bonds, found families, and what it means to be a part of one in rural and coastal North Wales.
For Noah, a non-binary person born and raised in Gogledd, their journey of self-discovery and chosen family was found through escaping into the magical virtual and material realms of cosplay and shapeshifting.
This film draws inspiration from fantasy cosplay, the Welsh landscape, and brings it together with the collective lived experiences and voices of vital LGBTQIA+ figures actively creating space for their communities in the region.
Inspired by the roles they play in reality, queer archetypes and new communal dining spaces will be manifested through animation, blending together the radical potential of fantasy and the spirit of queer resilience from the margins.
